How time shapes cognitive control: A high-density EEG study of task-switching

Task-switching is one of the most popular paradigms to investigate cognitive control. The main finding interest switch cost: RTs in trials are longer than repetition trials. Despite massive amount research these topics, little known about underlying temporal dynamics cortical regions involved phenomena. Here we used high density EEG unveil spatiotemporal neural associated with both cost and its modulation over time (time-on-task effect), as two markers control reflecting effortful procedural mechanisms, respectively. We found that, a function task practice, decreased switch-positivity switch-negativity event-related responses increased, although latter showed larger modulatory effect. At source level, this effect was revealed by progressively higher activation left middle superior frontal gyrus.
